Tangerine recently introduced two new money management tools, Tracker and Budget. Both help clients understand and manage their spending. Tracker organizes transactions into 1 of 119 categories, while Budget builds on that by letting clients set monthly spending goals.

However, transactions were automatically assigned categories that couldn’t be changed, leading to inaccurate insights. With over 1 million clients relying on these tools, this limitation created confusion and reduced trust.

We designed a new experience that lets clients customize the category of any transaction, ensuring their Tracker insights and budgets accurately reflect how they spend.

Imagine it’s Black Friday and you’ve just purchased a new TV from Walmart for $1,250.67 using your Tangerine Credit Card.

Spotting the miscategorization

Later, when you check your transaction history, you notice the purchase has been automatically categorized as “Groceries.” Although Walmart sells both food and electronics, we are limited by our tech so the system classifies transactions like this. What should appear under “Electronics” instead ends up inflating your grocery spending, making your insights less accurate.

The problem: No way to correct It

Previously, there was no way to fix this misclassification. Your TV purchase would remain categorized as groceries, skewing both your spending insights and monthly budget totals. For clients who rely on Tracker and Budget to understand where their money goes, these small errors added up, leading to frustration and reduced trust in the tool’s accuracy.
